Although the Indians dominated the first half, they had to hang on for a tough-fought 44-38 win. <em>Ken McGann photo<\/em>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>EAST MARLBOROUGH \u2014 After one quarter, it appeared that it was going to be a laugher.<\/p>\n<p>But as happens with young teams, Unionville could only totally dominate visiting Haverford for one half, before holding on for a hard-fought 44-38 win, Thursday in the opening game of the Unionville Holiday Tournament.<\/p>\n<p>The Indians (5-3) face Central Bucks East Friday for the tournament championship.<\/p>\n<p>Unionville was nothing short of ruthless in the first half, using the press and swarming defense to run out to a 16-3 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 32-9 lead at the half.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the best pressure we\u2019ve had in quite some time,\u201d Zambino said. \u201cWe were getting transition points, our outside shooting was excellent\u2026.everything was clicking.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13061\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/UHSGirlsBB-Haverford-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13061\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13061 \" style=\"border: 2px solid black; margin: 4px;\" title=\"UHSGirlsBB-Haverford-2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/UHSGirlsBB-Haverford-2-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13061\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Unionville&#8217;s Katie Cloud fights for the ball with Haverford&#8217;s Jess Lyons during Thursday&#8217;s game. <em>Ken McGann photo<\/em>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>With a such a big lead, coach Tony Zambino opted to ease off on the press.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously, we don\u2019t want to slam anybody, it was getting a bit out of hand,\u201d Zambino said, of his squad\u2019s domination of the Fords in the first half. \u201cSo we pulled of the press. And we stopped playing. I think we came out flat in the third quarter, figuring the game was over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With Zambino playing such a young lineup in 2012-13, it\u2019s probably not a shock to see the kind of mistake more experienced players would know to avoid. Aside from three seniors, starters Katie Cloud, Bella Gallo and key reserve Chrissy Eckman, the core of this team is made up of talented sophomores and freshmen, including sophomore starters Micayla Flores and Taylor Thames and freshman Samantha Pancoast. Emily Mason, Casey Schueuer and Lexi Shanahan \u2014 all sophomores \u2014 get key reserve minutes as well.<\/p>\n<p>And it was the younger players \u2014 Pancoast and Flores in particular \u2014 who led the first-half rally. Flores, who looks to be an emerging star, scored a game-high 11, while Pancost added eight points and Thames and Mason chipped in six each.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is something we have to figure out how to handle,\u201d Zambino said of his young team. \u201cWe could keep the press on and blow the other team out by 40, but that\u2019s not right for the other coach or the other team. We have to figure out how to balance that mentally, make that switch in their heads, so that when we stop pressing, we keep playing hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13059\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/UHSGirlsBB-Haverford-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13059\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13059 \" style=\"border: 2px solid black; margin: 4px;\" title=\"UHSGirlsBB-Haverford-1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/UHSGirlsBB-Haverford-1-300x246.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"246\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13059\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Unionville&#8217;s Taylor Thames battles through Haverford defenders to get to the basket, Thursday. <em>Ken McGann photo<\/em>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Friday\u2019s contest against Central Bucks East, a talented and tall team built around 6-2 senior center Courtney Webster, is likely to be a much tougher match up for the Indians \u2014 and they won\u2019t be able to have a similar lull if they expect to win.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not changing anything we\u2019re doing, we\u2019re going to go out and we\u2019re going to press them and see if they can handle it,\u201d Zambino said.<\/p>\n<p>As has been the story of the young season, Zambino said, it depends which version of his team shows up to play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been a bit like the stock market,\u201d he said. \u201cOne game, we\u2019re really up high and then after another game, we have a couple of lows. We had a couple of lows last week, after we had four highs in a row \u2014 we won four straight \u2014 and then we kind of fell apart.
