border: 0px none;\" title=\"UTKellyColumn\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/UTKellyColumn3-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/UTKellyColumn3-250x300.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/UTKellyColumn3-83x100.jpg 83w, https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/UTKellyColumn3.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 175px) 100vw, 175px\" \/><\/a>The last time I booked a family portrait, my youngest was still in diapers.\u00a0 He is 11 now.<\/p>\n<p>Why have I waited so long?\u00a0 The logistics of coordinating the four of us to be in the same place at the same time gets harder every year.\u00a0 Preaching to the choir, right?<\/p>\n<p>However, with the holiday season rapidly approaching and the reality that last year\u2019s plan for a Christmas card turned into a New Year, Valentine, St.Patty\u2019s Day, NEVER, EVER happened card, I need to get on it, asap.<\/p>\n<p>I will admit to being the mom who enjoyed matching outfits on my boys for every professional picture.\u00a0 Now that they are older, I would have to drug them to make that happen!\u00a0 But, I do want the picture to look visually appealing.\u00a0 A cacophonous hodge-podge of a wardrobe selection is NOT an option in my book.\u00a0 No sir-eee!<\/p>\n<p>Enter photographer, Amber Shader!<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Amber is a professional behind the lens who (very cleverly, I might add) helps counsel her clients as to the perfect clothing options necessary to result in the most flattering portraits.\u00a0 In her infinite wisdom, she has gone so far as to create a \u201cWhat to Wear\u201d Pinterest board to make styling a session remarkably easy!\u00a0 AMEN!<\/p>\n<p>Her suggestions?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Complimentary colors are your friend.\u00a0 NO \u201cmatchy-matchy\u201d!\u00a0 Step away from the white polo shirt and khaki pants\u2026(PERSONAL CONFESSION:\u00a0 you may or may not find several examples of this faux-pas in my extended family photo albums).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Wear properly fitting garments!\u00a0 No exposed thongs or bra-straps for all of eternity, please.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Stick with solid colors in neutral, earth or jewel tones.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be afraid to mix several colors within the same palette.\u00a0 For example:\u00a0 brown, cream, khaki, butter yellow, etc. look gorgeous together.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>For large group shots, it is even more important to stay within the same color scheme.\u00a0 This way the emphasis will be on the faces and not too many competing hues and patterns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Wear classic clothes.\u00a0 You all know what I am talking about.\u00a0 This is not the time or the place for my children to wear XL basketball shorts and knee high black socks that will MORTIFY them (HOPEFULLY) when they are grown men.\u00a0 (PERSONAL CONFESSION #2:\u00a0 My third grade school picture in a Mork&amp;Mindy t-shirt and barrettes with plastic streamers that I somehow convinced my mother to allow me to wear.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When you take the time and energy to plan and pay for photographs, you would like to display them prominently.\u00a0 So, do it RIGHT!<\/p>\n<p>Amber Shader\u2019s work has been featured in Martha Stewart, Martha Stewart Weddings, Style Me Pretty, Delaware Today, Animal Planet, Circle of Mom\u2019s and more.\u00a0 In other words, this gal knows her stuff.<\/p>\n<p>For more information or to book an appointment, contact her at <a href=\"mailto:info@ambershaderphotography.com\">info@ambershaderphotography.com<\/a>. <strong>Mention this article at the time of booking and receive a FREE Facebook cover photo and an image to use on her exclusive holiday cards from minted.com!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Happy Weekend!!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A few fashion tips for the family portrait, assuming you get everyone on the same page By Kelly Hockenberry, Columnist, The Times The last time I booked a family portrait, my youngest was still in diapers.\u00a0 He is 11 now.
