{"id":11434,"date":"2012-09-09T06:00:37","date_gmt":"2012-09-09T10:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=11434"},"modified":"2012-09-08T15:59:29","modified_gmt":"2012-09-08T19:59:29","slug":"mirror-mirror","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=11434","title":{"rendered":"Mirror, Mirror"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><em><strong>Do we worry too much about what we think others see?<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong>By Kelly Hockenberry<\/strong>, <span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><em>Columnist, The Times<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/UTKellyColumn1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-11436\" style=\"margin: 4px;\" title=\"UTKellyColumn\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/UTKellyColumn1-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/UTKellyColumn1-250x300.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/UTKellyColumn1-83x100.jpg 83w, https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/UTKellyColumn1.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 175px) 100vw, 175px\" \/><\/a>How often do you look in the mirror during the course of a day?<\/p>\n<p>Twice?\u00a0 Ten times?\u00a0 One hundred?<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve never actually taken the time to count.\u00a0 But, I think it\u2019s safe to say that I do it a MINIMUM of ten times.\u00a0 I wake up, fix my hair, and put on make-up.\u00a0 I go to the gym and workout (mirrors galore). \u00a0Every time I go to the bathroom, I sneak a peek to re-apply lipstick or re-do my ponytail.<\/p>\n<p>Does this make me vain?\u00a0 I don\u2019t think so.\u00a0 However, I recently read an article written by Autumn Whitefield-Madrano for the New York Times in which she commits to a month long \u201cmirror fast.\u201d\u00a0 She does not look into any reflective surface for thirty days.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Her hypothesis is that gazing into the mirror dictates her mood.\u00a0 Therefore, avoiding this habit forces her to focus on the image that she puts forth to the world with her actions and not her appearance.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>OK.\u00a0 Has a ring of truth to it. Would you agree?<\/p>\n<p>Think about how a bad hair day can make you miserable\u2026or a huge pimple on the end of your nose or when your pants look too tight (even though they fit perfectly fine last month). \u00a0Why does the way we look matter in the grand scheme of things?\u00a0 Is eliminating the mirror the key to self-love?<\/p>\n<p>If only\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s face it.\u00a0 We live in a visual world.\u00a0 People judge others based on their exterior MUCH faster than their interior.\u00a0 Is that fair?\u00a0 Probably not.\u00a0 But, to pretend that your appearance isn\u2019t relevant is naive.\u00a0 Your outfit, hairstyle and amount of make-up you apply are little keys to unlocking your personality.\u00a0 Whether we like it or not, we are giving others an impression of who we are without saying a word.<\/p>\n<p>I do believe that, as women, we are far too critical.\u00a0 The general population will never look like the girls on the cover of Glamour magazine.\u00a0 Even models don\u2019t look like \u201cthemselves\u201d without a team of experts behind the scenes!\u00a0 So, why do we try to compare our beauty to that manipulated image?<\/p>\n<p>I think that removing the mirrors from our environment doesn\u2019t solve the problem, though.\u00a0 Changing the way we interpret our reflection is the real solution.<\/p>\n<p>And, this concludes my article because I do not have any answers on how to accomplish this\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>Happy Weekend!<\/p>\n<p>And, by all means, stay away from the magnifying mirror (at the very least).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do we worry too much about what we think others see?
