{"id":11234,"date":"2012-08-28T15:03:00","date_gmt":"2012-08-28T19:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=11234"},"modified":"2012-08-28T15:39:08","modified_gmt":"2012-08-28T19:39:08","slug":"emergencies-happen-are-you-ready-county-asks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=11234","title":{"rendered":"Emergencies happen; are you ready, county asks?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: medium;\"><strong>County&#8217;s Department of Emergency Services to educate during National Preparedness Month<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong>By Kathleen Brady Shea<\/strong><\/span>, <em><span style=\"font-size: x-small; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Managing Editor, The Times<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11240\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?attachment_id=11240\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11240\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11240\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11240 \" style=\"border-width: 2px; border-color: black; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;\" title=\"Image 5\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Image-5-300x263.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11240\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Displaying the proclamation issued by the Chester County Commissioners are Anne Shuinak, Chester County Food Bank; Vicky Mayer, Royer Greaves School for the Blind; Nancy Keefer, Chester County Chamber of Business and Industry; Robert Kagel, Chester County Dept. of Emergency Services; and Michael Curry, Vanguard.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As highlighted this week while Hurricane Issac bore down on the Gulf Coast, there no such thing as being too prepared for an emergency.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, and knowing the benefits of advance planning, the Chester County Board of Commissioners committed last week to participate in September\u2019s National Preparedness Month.<\/p>\n<p>Now in its ninth year, the nationwide initiative, hosted by the <em>Ready<\/em> Campaign and emergency management organizations across the nation, encourages households, businesses and communities to prepare and plan for emergencies.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>One of National Preparedness Month\u2019s key messages stresses preparations for an event \u00a0that might cause residents to be self-reliant for three days without utilities and electricity, water service, access to a supermarket or local services, or maybe even without access to police, fire or rescue.<\/p>\n<p>The Chester County Department of Emergency Services (DES) will sponsor a number of programs this September to help educate Chester County citizens on how best to prepare, county officials said.\u00a0 On Sept. 5, representatives will visit area train stations during the morning rush hour to distribute a newspaper with information on how to prepare.\u00a0 On Sept. 8 and 9, DES will participate in the annual Mushroom Festival in Kennett Square.<\/p>\n<p>DES will host a preparedness workshop at the Chester County Library on Sept. 12.\u00a0 On Sept. 15 \u00a0DES will attend Harmony Day in Honey Brook and \u00a0the Restaurant Festival in West Chester on Sept. 16.\u00a0 A business summit will be held Sept. 18 at Penn State Great Valley.\u00a0 On Sept. 26, DES will host a display at the Exton Square Mall.\u00a0 Additionally, DES will host a number of events for county employees during lunch hours in conjunction with the Chester County Wellness Committee.<\/p>\n<p>Other activities will include a volunteer recruitment fair on Sept. 22 at the Government Services Center.\u00a0 The morning will provide an opportunity for volunteer and non-profit organizations to interact for possible collaborations, and the afternoon will offer an opportunity for the public to learn about these volunteer organizations and how to get involved.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, DES has partnered with the Chester County Chamber of Business Industry and Chester County FIRST to develop a simple preparedness program for businesses.
