The other two partners, Martha and Manuel Rodriguez, recalled having an equally positive reaction, but tempered with trepidation:\u00a0 Could they really make it happen?<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->A decade later, two successful business ventures are generating rave reviews and a loyal &#8211; and ever-growing following \u2013 despite the dismal economy and some unwelcome obstacles: flooding, a failed expansion effort, and a fire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had our share of challenges,\u201d Gonzalez said, acknowledging the understatement.<\/p>\n<p>But the foursome, committed to 80-hour-plus workweeks, say the efforts have been worthwhile. La Michoacana Homemade Ice Cream, named after Gonzalez\u2019s home state in Mexico, debuted in June 2003 in the 200 block of East State Street. In October, the group opened Michoacana Grill, a few blocks away in the 200 block of South Union Street.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10979\" style=\"width: 294px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?attachment_id=10979\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10979\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10979\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10979 \" style=\"border-width: 2px; border-color: black; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;\" title=\"DSC_6239\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/DSC_6239-284x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"284\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10979\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Outside the grill, Manuel Rodriguez (left) and Martha Rodriguez join employee Elidia Medina. The Rodriguezes called Medina an indispensable \u00a0member of their team and one of the few who is not a family member.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cFollow your dream,\u201d said Scharon, 45. \u201cThat\u2019s the message here; it\u2019s what I keep telling people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scharon, who was born in Puerto Rico but relocated to Mexico at a young age, said she missed Mexican flavors like tamarind and mango. Her business partners, all Mexican natives, agreed, leading to a store that features an exotic selection of ice cream and water ice that first-time visitors often find daunting.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to standard vanilla and chocolate, patrons can partake of passion fruit or pineapple, rice pudding or black raspberry. \u00a0Containers of cinnamon and chili powder for dusting on the ice cream rest on the counter, beckoning the more adventurous palates.<\/p>\n<p>Several months after the shop opened, a storm caused oil tanks in the basement to overflow, contaminating the building, but not the owners\u2019 resolve. \u00a0Even though\u00a0Scharon and Manuel Gonzalez had kept their jobs at Kaolin Mushroom Farms \u00a0during the first year of operation \u2013 just in case \u2013 the business was thriving. \u00a0The evacuation would be temporary, they said, vowing to rebuild.<\/p>\n<p>After the store reopened and began prospering again, the owners started a second store in Newark, De., but the location &#8211; a couple of miles from the University of Delaware\u2019s campus &#8211; didn\u2019t suit them, said Gonzalez, 44.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s great about this place is that so many people can walk here,\u201d he said, standing at the counter of the original site. \u201cIt has become a meeting place, which is just wonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10980\" style=\"width: 308px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?attachment_id=10980\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10980\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10980\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10980 \" style=\"border-width: 2px; border-color: black; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;\" title=\"Image 3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Image-3-298x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"298\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10980\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Co-owner Juvenal Gonzalez, who does double duty as grill cook and ice-cream creator, gets ready for the lunch rush at Michoacana Grill.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Scharon said they deliberately keep prices low enough that neighborhood families can afford to visit.\u00a0 A generously-sized small dish or cone costs $2.50, a kids\u2019 cone,\u00a0 $1.50.<\/p>\n<p>Some regular customers, \u00a0lured by the unusual, travel from as far as Reading, Lancaster, and New Jersey to satisfy appetites for corn &#8211; one of the biggest sellers &#8211; \u00a0avocado, toasted coconut,\u00a0 Nutella, or mamey, a peach-like Mexican fruit.<\/p>\n<p>Gonzalez, the ice-cream maestro, buys the bulk of his supplies from a local Hispanic market and enjoys experimentation. \u00a0Many flavors, such as guavas and cream, get their inspiration from orchards south of the border; others, like almond and Kahlua, resulted from requests, which Gonzalez loves to pursue.<\/p>\n<p>For the almond ice cream, he said he began pulverizing some nuts and added some almond paste for extra richness.\u00a0 After several versions \u2013 and a lot of personal taste-testing \u2013 he said he committed the recipe to his files, and watches with satisfaction as customers savor the sweet results.<\/p>\n<p>Not every creation has generated diehard devotees. They learned after their purchase that the store hadn&#8217;t yet &#8220;officially&#8221; opened for the day.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It absolutely had fans, Scharon added, citing orders that came from the nearby Exelon facility and a customer in Hockessin, De.<\/p>\n<p>A spate of positive write-ups attests to the store\u2019s reputation for quality. It has won \u201cbest\u201d designations from Philadelphia Magazine and Main Line Today and is currently vying for bragging rights on Philadelphia Channel 17\u2019s \u201chot list.\u201d To vote, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/phillyhotlist.cityvoter.com\/best\/philadelphia\">http:\/\/phillyhotlist.cityvoter.com\/best\/philadelphia<\/a>. The Michoacana Grill is also a nominee.<\/p>\n<p>Scharon remembered a phone call she received from a Manhattan resident who said he read about the store in the New York Times. \u201cHe asked me where the nearest airport was,\u201d Scharon said. Taken aback, she replied, \u201cPhiladelphia,\u201d but he said he was a pilot and could fly into a closer airport. \u201cI suggested New Garden,\u201d she said, adding that she didn\u2019t know if he ever visited.<\/p>\n<p>The idea for the restaurant, credited to Gonzalez, surfaced because the quartet actually had down time when the ice-cream shop closed during the winter. Gonzalez, who came to the U.S. in the late \u201880s, said he worked in Mexican restaurants starting at age 15, so the grill presented a great opportunity to capitalize on his culinary background.<\/p>\n<p>The partners now divide their time between the two enterprises, sometimes alternating on the same day between scooping ice cream and preparing\u00a0 a variety of tacos, burritos and quesadillas.. \u00a0In addition to sales of 35 to 40, 3-gallon tubs of ice cream on a busy day, the owners now deliver their products to more than 200 other venues in the region, Gonzalez said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10984\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?attachment_id=10984\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10984\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10984\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10984 \" style=\"border-width: 2px; border-color: black; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;\" title=\"DSC_6245\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/DSC_6245-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10984\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The La Michoacana mobile awaits the next batch of ice cream and popsicle deliveries, which go to more than 200 destinations.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cYou forget about the long hours you work when someone says, \u2018I just traveled two hours for your ice cream,\u2019\u201d Scharon said. \u201cIn two hours, they must have passed five or six other shops so that\u2019s pretty special.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martha, 36, and her husband, Manuel, 37, said seeing smiles on customers\u2019 faces makes the job gratifying, and camaraderie with co-workers makes it fun. Both stores exude a family atmosphere, enabled by the high percentage of employees who are relatives. One day, some of the four Rodriguez children, who range in age from 2 to 13, are likely to be part of that mix, Martha Rodriguez said.<\/p>\n<p>Like the ice-cream store, the grill hit a snag in its first year. In early July, an old refrigerator sparked a blaze next door, pouring smoke into the restaurant and forcing it to close. The partners revved into rebound gear. In less than a week, the Health Department issued an OK, and burritos were back in business<\/p>\n<p>Scharon, the mother of three sons, one of whom works for the businesses, said the group greatly values its customers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegulars know if they get here late and the door is closed, they should knock if they see lights because we\u2019ll open for them,\u201d she said of the ice-cream store. \u201cI don\u2019t think any of the chains would do that &#8211; and we like it that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gonzalez echoes her sentiments, adding that patrons\u2019 smiles energize him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s amazing how a small business can bring a lot of different people together,\u201d he said. \u201cSeeing all the happy faces is great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of them is Karen Halstead, a former teacher and school board member in the Unionville district who typically enters &#8220;her favorite sweet shop&#8221; singing.
