Beyond the very lucky few, getting the right hair color can be tricky<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>A woman came up to me in Starbucks the other day to compliment my hair color. \u00a0\u201cIs it natural?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

Hmmmmmmmm.<\/p>\n

What does that mean EXACTLY?<\/p>\n

I was born a redhead.\u00a0 I think given my skin tone, eye color and fiery disposition that would be obvious to most.\u00a0 However, the vibrant hue of my youth needs some assistance as of late.<\/p>\n

When you really think about it\u2026does any woman over the age of (approximately) 30 really know what her \u201cnatural\u201d hair color is?<\/p>\n

And, if you DO, perhaps it\u2019s time to visit your favorite professional hair stylist for an update!\u00a0 (Had to add that in because I\u2019m bitter that you aren\u2019t dyeing your hair by now)<\/p>\n

My \u201cnatural\u201d hair color, at this point, is probably about 25 to 30% grey.<\/p>\n

Aaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!<\/p>\n

However, I will NEVER truly know the percentage because I will be buried in the ground (at age 100+) with my hair freshly colored and coiffed.<\/p>\n

I struggle (as a redhead) with what color that will be; but, suffice it to say, it will NOT be grey.<\/p>\n

Achieving the perfect strawberry blond is really quite difficult.\u00a0 Heaven knows, I do not want to look like \u201cTruck stop Sallie\u201d with the orange-y red box color not found in nature.\u00a0 Nor do I want to evolve into the little old lady with a purple \u2018do and fuchsia highlights.\u00a0 You know what I\u2019m talking about.\u00a0 It ain\u2019t pretty.<\/p>\n

The first step to the perfect hair color is brutal honesty.\u00a0 Do not try to be a \u201ccolor\u201d that you are not.\u00a0 For example, we all have observed women who have NO business being blond.\u00a0 There are obvious psychological\/social benefits to this pigment (I get it); however, if your overall complexion cannot support it, it just ends up looking fake.\u00a0 And, cheap. THERE, I said it! OK? Girl, you know it\u2019s true.<\/p>\n

Brunettes don\u2019t have it easy, either.\u00a0 Often times, brown hair can look dull and flat.\u00a0 The appeal of fabulous chestnut locks are the golden highlights and dimension that naturally just \u201chappen\u201d to young children. \u00a0Trying to re-create that effect as you age is like trying to eat soup with a fork.\u00a0 Hard. \u00a0Right?<\/p>\n

I understand that having your hair professionally colored (especially if you, like me, feel that it is necessary every two months) is a large expense.\u00a0 HOWEVER, I truly believe that you owe it to yourself to have it done by a person specially trained (at least a few times) to get the correct shade and proper means of application down pat. \u00a0Then, and only then, are you free to experiment with something that you buy at the grocery store.<\/p>\n

Just make sure to have your stylist\u2019s number on speed dial.<\/p>\n
