Turning to the experts at No. 109 & Houppette

By Kelly Hockenberry, Columnist, The Times

Writing this article week after week has truly honed my style skills. Over the past five years, I have researched so much about trends, tubes of mascara, and the art of finding the cutest, most comfortable shoe, I feel like an expert on all things fashion.

Alas, I am not. (But, a girl can dream).

Thankfully for all of you, I have friends with REAL knowledge. Namely, two women who are as gorgeous on the inside as they are on the outside: Cristi Miller of Houppette and Heather Robitzer of No109Shop. Both local girl bosses here in Kennett Square, they are like the dream team when it comes to getting pretty. So, I picked their brains about what advice they can offer to make Fall 2017 the most fabulous, EVER.

Here’s what I found out:

Cristi Miller –

The drop in temperature requires a change to your skincare routine. Loss of moisture contributes to an aged appearance (and no one wants that!) Plus, creating a smooth base from which to apply your cosmetics is the key to a flawless appearance. Cristi is extremely knowledgeable about effective products we can add to our daily regime to revitalize our skin quality. For example, the Hyaluronic Acid (H.A.) Intensifier by Skincueticals is a multi-beneficial serum that amplifies our own natural production of hyaluronic acid to improve the tone and texture of the skin. According to the instructions: Once daily, apply 4 to 6 drops into the palm of the hand and dab onto forehead, cheeks, chin, and neck. Blend thoroughly.

The Diamond Glyco Extreme Peel by Natura Bisse and the Resurfacing Mask by Tata Harper are two options designed to slough off the dull, dead skin cells from summer. Both products help to deliver a glow, minimize pore size, and provide deep hydration. The instructions recommend usage two times per week to refresh and renew.

When it comes to cosmetics, it is nice to switch things up once the season changes. It’s fun to experiment with different hues as the weather gets colder. For example, Cristi suggests the Kevyn Aucoin Celestial Bronzing Veil in Tropical Nights. This multi-use powder is perfect to bronze, highlight, and sculpt the face. Although the name may suggest otherwise, the color is actually on the cool side, which is great for the paler skin of autumn.

Lipstick is an easy way to impart dramatic results. Two of Cristi’s favorites for fall include Swank by Bare Minerals and Blood Roses Noir by Kevyn Aucoin. Both have a rich, saturated color that will turn heads!

Heather Robitzer –

When it comes to fashion, fall is my fav! Sweaters, jeans, and scarves, OH MY! I love, love, love it all. So does Heather…and she has the best taste on the planet and stocks her boutique, No109Shop, accordingly. This fact seriously affects my shopping compulsion. As I tried on (yet another) pile of amazing clothes in the dressing room, Heather rattled off a list of her tops picks. We all NEED a bomber jacket. Wear it glam by pairing with a dress or keep it casual with a statement t-shirt and jeans.

Fur (real or faux)! Accessorize with a fur vest or scarf and instantly elevate your outfit. Heather suggests wearing one over your leather jacket for an extra cool vibe. LOVE that idea.

A detailed sleeve is a huge trend for fall. Ruffles, bows, bell sleeves…the more exaggerated, the better. Keep the bottom half classic to keep the attention on the top.

Metallics are a must have! Add the glow of gold, bronze, or silver by incorporating unique pieces of jewelry or an interesting handbag.

Frayed denim. I am slightly obsessed with this tip. I really have too many jeans for one person…but, I. CAN’T. STOP. (or, won’t) The funkier the bottom of the jean, the more I want it. And, YES, you can incorporate this look into your wardrobe as it is NOT only for people aged 20 years and younger. But, YES, you do need confidence and a zest for life. But, you should really have that already…know what I’m saying?

There you have it. Straight from the women who know beauty in our little neck of the woods. Take the afternoon to stroll State Street in Kennett Square and visit both boutiques! They are open 12 to 4 on Sunday afternoon. Tell them that Kelly sent you.

Happy Weekend
