KENNETT SQUARE – At Monday night’s meeting of the Kennett Consolidated School District Board, it was announced that three long-time members of the Kennett High School staff will be retiring at the end of the school year.

English teacher Carol Aiken, Spanish teacher Stephanie Lluna-Garces, and administrative assistant to the principal Rebecca Majeski will all be retiring by the end of June. They have worked at the high school for 25, 24, and 22 years, respectively. The board members expressed their gratitude for the service of all three women.

“The most difficult part is going to be trying to find people to fil those shoes, because they are outstanding,” Superintendent Barry Tomasetti said. “There is a very big void to fill.”

“Those three ladies have spent 71 years serving Kennett kids, and their parents and taxpayers,” Bob Norris noted.

Heather Schaen referred to Aiken as “a pillar of the English department,” and said Lluna-Garces “had very high standards, and the growth that the students made in her class is pretty amazing.”

Assistant Superintendent Michael Barber worked with Majeski when he was principal of Kennett High School, and he commented, “We knew Becky was the boss, I’d never dispute that.”

Vice President Joseph Meola ran the meeting in the absence of President Kendra LaCosta, who was away on business.

During Tomasetti’s report, members of the Kennett High School Demon Robotics team announced that they have been qualified to attend the World Championships event in St. Louis on April 26-29. It will be the first time in the team’s six-year history that they will compete in the event, and 12 of the team’s 25 members are expected to make the trip. The board congratulated the students on their success and wished them continued luck.

Meola announced that State Rep. Eric Roe (R-158) will be attending the Liaison Committee Meeting on Monday, April 17 at 7 p.m. at the Mary D. Lang Kindergarten Center. He noted that the meeting is open to the public, and anyone who is interested is encouraged to attend. Roe, who represents New Garden within KCSD, will be speaking about state budget topics related to the school district, and he will listen to public comments and answer questions.

The board approved a settlement agreement presented by Yvette Line-Koller, in which the district has negotiated to resolve a special education issue with the parents of a student in order to avoid further disputes or litigation. The terms of the agreement are confidential, and it does not constitute an admission of fault or liability by either party.

The board approved the quarterly financial reports as presented by Mark Tracy, as well as the proposed 2017-2018 Chester County Intermediate Unit Core budget, which is $25,768,573. The school district’s projected contribution to this budget is $34,581.

The meeting closed with a review of the upcoming calendar of events, including the Kennett High School Chamber Concert, which will be held at the School’s auditorium on Tuesday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m.
