Capturing a unique look in images

Jie Lan’s People of Kennett Square offers a mesmerizing look at people

By Kelly Hockenberry, Columnist, The Times

kellycolumnnewest916In the spirit of the change in season and switching out my wardrobe for fall, I figured that I would take the opportunity to update my Times headshot, as well. (I’m sure you all were on pins and needles waiting for this).

A few months ago, I had the opportunity to be photographed by, Jie Lan, of In the Eye Photography to be featured as part of her blog, People of Kennett Square. You can read about my experience by clicking this link: https://www.unionvilletimes.com/?p=30222

I am inspired by artistic people and want to know what makes them see the world in such a unique and creative way. Jie’s photographs are so visually mesmerizing. She really has a talent for uncovering the beauty in everyday things. You can follow Jie’s blog by liking People of Kennett Square on Facebook or by signing up for her newsletter here: http://bit.ly/2cgozrv.

I asked if she would mind answering a few of my questions so that I could share her story with all of you.

What inspired you to start your blog?

I saw a photographer in New York doing his photography project “Humans of New York”, he took people’s photos on street. I was thinking, that’s such a cool idea, and I could do it here in Kennett Square, so I started my project: ” People of Kennett Square”. I find people who live or work in KSQ, and contact them for a photoshoot and interview. I want to tell their stories through my lens.

How long have you been a photographer?

It’s been 3 years. I always love to take photos, but never got serious until 2013.

That year I signed up for some photography courses online. I took my camera everywhere, and gave myself an assignment everyday. I didn’t have a model, I took pictures of my daughter, and sometimes I did selfportraits. I also asked friends to be my models. Photography is my passion, I feel very lucky to be able to call my passion my job.

What inspires you?

Everything around me. Maybe a book, a painting, or a flower etc.

What is your favorite thing to photograph?

I love to photograph people. I love to talk to them and capture their beautiful moments. I also like still life and food photography.

How can people get in contact with you if they would like their picture taken?

I have my contact information on my website. They can email me at intheeye2013@gmail.com or call me. my  website is www.intheeyephotography.com.
