‘Tis the season for giving back

The holidays are coming! Have you noticed? People are posting on Facebook about the number
of Fridays until Christmas (enough already, it is still 80 degrees outside!), the lottery ticket
commercial featuring Joe and Rita is on TV, and I saw someone on a ladder putting up twinkle
lights just the other day. Aaaaaaaaaaah! Can we slow our roll just a bit and enjoy November?

If anything, I would rather start the countdown to Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving is my favorite
holiday because there is no pressure to present the perfect gift. It’s all about family and being
grateful for the wonderful blessings we often take for granted.KellyColumn415Newest815-251x300
It is also a great time of year to help those less fortunate in our community. This week, I would
like to highlight the Neighbors In Action program developed by the Kennett Senior Center in
conjunction with the Chester County Department of Aging.

This project assists homebound people to give them the help they need to remain autonomous. The list of support services that
volunteers provide are: transportation to medical appointments, grocery shopping, light
housekeeping, minor house repairs, yard work, reading/writing assistance, telephone
reassurance, and companion visits.

After a background check and clearance, volunteers are matched with seniors based on their
interests and preferences. Assistance is provided on an “as requested”, on call basis Monday
through Friday.

Neighbors in Action relies on its core of volunteers to keep the program afloat. Please consider a donation of your time. You can make a huge difference in the life of a fellow resident of Kennett Square.
